ESWPEN-TU Activities & Events

As part of Work Package 2 (WP 2) of the Empowering Social Work Practice Education in Nepal (ESWPEN) Project, a three-day Needs Assessment Programme was organized at CNAS, Tribhuvan University. The programme focused on understanding key needs and priorities related to social work practice education in Nepal from different stakeholders’ perspective and providing a basis for understanding and co-building framework for practice education through research. The Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) was conducted with 5 cohorts of different stakeholders; students, educators, practitioners, agency/ organization, clients/ service recipients including visits to three different organization providing direct services to the clients.

The ESWPEN Project organised its Project Management Board Meeting as part of Work Package 2. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to discuss project implementation, coordination, and strategic priorities. The participation of senior representatives from Tribhuvan University and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology contributed to institutional engagement and coordination for the implementation of the project.

The ESWPEN Project officially commenced its implementation through a Kick-off Meeting held at CNAS, Tribhuvan University. The meeting brought together project stakeholders to establish a common understanding of the project’s objectives, planned activities, and implementation approach, and to strengthen coordination among the participating institutions.

Under Work Package 3 (WP3):Learning and Teaching Resources, the ESWPEN Project Seminar and Working Meeting was organized by National University of Distance Education,UNED-Spain, in Madrid. The meeting brought together representatives of ESWPEN partner institutions for discussions and working sessions on learning and teaching resources. TribhuvanUniversity (TU) was represented byAsst. Prof.Sukrita Rai, who is also the Project Coordinator for ESWPEN, TU.

The Academic- Agency Collaboration and Stakeholder Consultation Meeting brought together representatives from field agencies, employers, social work teachers from different campuses, and professional organisations. The consultation focused on strengthening university/ campus-practice partnerships in social work, identifying quality field placement opportunities, and improving supervision mechanisms for social work education.

The Seed Training Programme for Teachers and Supervisors was conducted to strengthen the competencies of university teachers, field supervisors in competency-based social work education, field supervision, and practice-oriented teaching methodologies. The programme supported the development of knowledge and skills linking social work education, field practice, and effective supervision. The residential training programme was held for ten days at Biratnagar where social work teachers/ supervisors from 11 different campuses affiliated to Tribhuvan University meaningfully participated. The program was organized by Tribhuvan University, Mid-Western University and Purbanchal University, and was facilitated by three different European university; University of Eastern Finland- Finland, University of Ostrava -Chez Republic andUniversidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Spain.

The Student Orientation and Meet-up Programme was organized under the ESWPEN-TU to introduce students to the project’s objectives, activities, and opportunities for engagement in practice-oriented social work education. Prof. Dr. Shankar Prasad Khanal, Acting Rector of Tribhuvan University, honored the program as a chief guest delivering a motivational session on significance of field work practice in social work, a skill based profession. Dr. Mrigendra Bahadur Karki, Executive Director- CNAS also delivered a session exploring opportunities and necessity of field work practice in social work discipline. The programme provided an opportunity for students to interact with the project team and discuss social work education, field practice, and professional development.

Venue: Tilganga, Save the Children International office meeting room

A consultative meeting was held with Mr. Saroj K.C., Child protection and Child Rights Governance technical advisor of Save the Children International (SCI), to explore strategic collaboration between SCI and the ESWPEN Project. The discussion focused on potential collaboration on strengthening professional social work education and practice, particularly in the areas of research, child protection, child rights governance, and mental health.

Agency: Warming Hearts Nepal – Sayan Samaj

A consultative agency visit was held with Warming Hearts Nepal – Sayan Samaj to discuss the proposed three-month field placement of social work trainees (students). The discussion focused on social work practice, needs assessment, casework, group work, and research, with attention to need and support to the children battling with cancer and their family. The meeting also explored the proposed “Asha Project- for children with cancer” and the development of a Tripartite Agreement between ESWPEN, Warming Hearts Nepal-Sayan Samaj, and participating trainees.

A brief orientation and interaction meeting was held with Master of Social Work (MSW) students participating in the ESWPEN-TU Field Placement Programme through CNAS, Tribhuvan University. The ESWPEN-TU team discussed the field placement process, expectations, roles, responsibilities, and opportunities for students to apply social work knowledge and skills in practice settings. The meeting also provided an opportunity for students to interact with the project team and clarify matters related to their field placement.

Regularly, every two weeks | Online via Microsoft Teams

The ESWPEN Project conducts regular Seed Trainers’ Online Peer Support/ Supervision Session with Seed Trainers through Microsoft Teams. The session is being facilitated by the professors from three European partner Universities. The sessions provide a structured space for Seed Trainers to share their student field-placement experiences, discuss challenges, and present student practice cases and ethical dilemmas for collective reflection and peer learning. The sessions support ongoing professional development and strengthen the capacity of Seed Trainers to provide effective and reflective supervision to social work students.

Regularly, every two weeks | Online
ESWPEN-TU conducts regular biweekly coordination meetings with Seed Trainers to review ongoing activities, discuss implementation progress, and address emerging challenges related to field placement. The meetings provide a structured space for coordination, information sharing, joint problem-solving, and planning of upcoming activities, supporting consistent communication and collaboration between the ESWPEN-TU team and Seed Trainers from different campuses.

Regularly, every two weeks | Hybrid: In-person and Online

ESWPEN-TU provides ongoing supervision to Bachelor/ MSW students participating in the field placement programme through both in-person and online sessions. The supervision provides a  space for students to reflect on their field experiences, discuss practice challenges, present cases, and explore ethical dilemmas encountered during their placement. The sessions support students in connecting academic learning with professional social work practice and promote reflective, ethical, and practice-oriented learning.
